The Two-way trust is temporary in this instance for the express purpose of being able to set up an import connection from the trusting domain. This is necessary if the trusting domain has simple binds disabled in their AD. Otherwise the SSP App Pool account will never be able to validate the import connection account.

Perhaps your other comment about setting the Peoplepicker-Searchadforests property on the MySites would hold true for the SSP WebApp as well. I'll have to give it a try next time I run into this.

Thanks for the reply!

I had the same situation - the fix for me was to actually run the STSADM.exe –o setproperty –pn peoplepicker-searchadforests command specifying the trusted domain where users are authenticating from, a trusted domain account and password AND the url of the actual MYSITE.
The way I found this out was by enabling logging to the fullest within central admin, and I saw that while trying to create the mysite, it would fail with "USER CAN NOT BE FOUND" - come to find out, the creation of mysites and the finding of users is all driving through the people picker. If the people picker is not setup to search external domains / trusted domains with an actual account from the trusted domain, creation of the mysite will not work.

[...] Forms based authentication is this version of SharePoint is much better than the last, in that there is the option to do it. It could use some improvement, but it is a good start. There are plenty of blog posts out there that go over this as well as a few tools on CodePlex, so I wont go into the details. One of the best posts I found on the subject is: http://blog.sharepoint-voodoo.net/?p=6 [...]
